The visitors blossomed following the introduction of Arjen Robben on 14 minutes but failed to make the most of their first-half superiority. That all changed 12 minutes after the restart, though, when Siem de Jong headed in Ruben Schaken's cross. The pair combined again ten minutes later with De Jong on hand to deliver the final flourish.
Robben then marked a masterly performance with a venomous third on a special day for striker Robin van Persie, who captained the Oranje for the first time. "The coach asked me on Monday if I wanted to be captain. I said yes because it is such a great honour for me," said the 29-year-old Manchester United FC player.
"It was not always an easy match. There was not a lot of air and it was really hot out there. We played in our own style, with an eye on the future, and all in all did pretty well," he added.
